Blitz the Biennale
The international art hordes have departed, so it’s safe to now explore the recently launched 20th Biennale of Sydney. Fortunately, it runs until 5 June, so you have ample time to explore all the venues including the usual suspects (AGNSW, Cocktatoo Island, MCA, Artspace and Carriageworks) plus a constellation of public spaces, mostly spread across the Inner West. Save the institutions for a rainy day and pound the pavement instead.
Bo Christian Larsson transforms Camperdown Cemetery into a ghost town with the help of seamstresses sewing together elaborate white covers to sheath the tombstones, whilst Charwei Tsai’s smouldering spiral domes of incense swing gently above the abandoned platform of a mortuary train station in Chippendale. Inscribed with philosophic Tibetan text, they are meditations on death, and equally, a reflection on life’s transience. It’s a treat just to take a peak inside the Gothic revival building. In a warehouse space behind The Block in Redfern, Keg de Souza has recycled multi-coloured tents, joining them together into a humongous, interactive mass to form the meeting place for active discussion about local displacement, homelessness in Sydney and the global refugee crisis.
Performance is integral to this Biennale, and is presented at each venue and satellite space by artists including Boris Charmatz, Germain Krupp, Neha Choksi, Mette Edvardsen, Agatha Gothe-Snape, Mella Jaarsma, Adam Linder, and Justene Williams with the Sydney Chamber Opera. Most intriguing is Ghost Telephone, a chain performance at the Art Gallery of NSW for which various artists will channel the spirits of the works in the museum’s collection.
