Equip: Golden Age Cinema

Golden Age Cinema & Bar in Surry Hills’ own Hollywood strip, believes deeply in the magic of the movies. Situated in the historic Paramount House (the former home of Paramount Pictures), there’s an elegantly designed screening room to watch the carefully curated film program, and a cosy bar in which to settle into for a passionate conversation about what you’ve just seen, over cocktails and supper of course. And when the discussion starts to run too deep, there might just be a live band hidden by the curtain to play Live on the Golden Stage while you collect your celluloid thoughts. There’s even film trivia on Tuesdays to test/show off your knowledge.

The Director of Programming Kate Jinx pulls together a year-round line-up of the best new independent films, cults, classics, creepies, and special events that all fit together thematically each season. Peppered alongside matinée sessions of golden oldies, and Saturday Date Night Duos of beloved favourites – you’ll find the films closest to Jinx’s heart, the Sydney Exclusives. These are the films you can only catch at Golden Age and they’re all films that expand the notion of what a movie can be – from campy sex magic in The Love Witch, to the beautiful, unrelenting Montana landscape in Certain Women (both currently playing at Golden Age). With a strong focus on documentaries, foreign language films, forgotten cult movies, and features made by women, there’s something for every kind of cinema-lover, and always something new to take a risk on. And isn’t that, essentially, the business of film?
