FACT: The sandwich was named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich (a gambling addict who was often stuck at the cards table so long, he would request meat in between slices of bread).
FACT: The most expensive sandwich ever made sold for 215 USD. Ingredients included bread (made with Dom Perignon champagne and 24 karat edible gold flakes), white truffle butter and some seriously rare cheese.
FACT: Sandwiches save lions. Remember the MGM lion? You know, the one that always roars at the beginning of old films? In 1927, as part of a publicity stunt MGM built him his own aeroplane to travel across the US. Just five hours into the first flight, disaster struck and the plane crashed into the Arizona desert. Though the pilot and the MGM lion were both unharmed, it took four days before they were found. So how did they get through it? Sandwiches. What more convincing could you possibly need? Join us this month for Table at The Sandwich Shop. Think good quality sourdough, slow cooked meats, and homemade sauces.
