Long before sustainability was a hashtag or buzzword, Australian design duo Alexandra and Genevieve Smart have made made ethical fashion a pillar of their luxury label, Ginger & Smart. As an outworking of this, and in support of the Sydney Women’s Fund (SWF), Alexandra and Genevieve have designed the ‘Strong & Kind’ Tote bag which is then made by refugee and humanitarian migrant women who have joined the SWF Community Sewing Circle. These women are able to earn real wages and receive formal manufacturing training to make the Tote bags according to Australian quality standards. The women will also receive life-changing mentoring from Alexandra and Genevieve, and the inspiration to pursue their own career and entrepreneurial goals. All proceeds from the sale of the ethically made Strong & Kind Tote will be reinvested to transform the lives of women and girls in need in Sydney. Each Tote purchase provides women opportunity, experience, and the confidence to strive for financial independence.
