Guide: All of Sydney’s Spectacles in May

Vivid Sydney—the iconic annual festival of light, music and ideas returns to Sydney this May, showcasing the best of Australia’s art, innovation and installation. There’s also Mercedes Benz Australian Fashion Week, and the Sydney Writer’s Festival to fill up your evenings and weekends.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia Style has arrived in Sydney as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week returns to our shores. As Australia’s international fashion platform, fashion week parades our brightest and most promising designers exclusively at Carriageworks, Eveleigh. Not just for industry invited guests but open to the public, MBFWA hosts an array of events including talks, studio sessions, runway shows and tutorials, showcasing the latest fashion trends. Tickets start from $50 and vary from opening night canapés, front-row runway seats and the full VIP experience. Cult Aussie label Romance Was Born will be closing the festivities on Thursday 18th in what has become one of the most highly anticipated runway show on the Australian fashion calendar.  To brush up on your fashion knowledge, explore the incredible trajectory of this much-loved label as Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales were interviewed by The Office Space director Naomi Tosic as a stand out Insight event late last year. Watch the video here.

Vivid – Light (Royal Botanic Gardens) Wonder through the winter wonderland that is our Sydney Botanic Gardens, and explore the bold and bright experiences of various Vivid installations. Adventure through the wandering eyes that follow your path as you walk by, interact with the delicate display of dandelions as they fall and float through the air, or play with the big red button and curiously question human impact and environmental issues.

Music (Harbour Bridge Dance Floor) Ever wanted to have a dance party on top of the harbour bridge? Well now you can! This month Vivid continues to push the boundaries, bringing us exceptional sensory overloads, this time – an illuminated dance floor in the sky. Grab 14 friends and join the Vivid bridge climb this year, joining exercise, art and city-sweeping views as you get down and dirty during your very own dance party under the stars.

Vivid – Ideas The Office Space has partnered with Vivid this year to bring you an outstanding (and almost-sold-out) panel of film industry heavyweights for a very special Insight. The Business of Film will feature The Actor (Susie Porter), The Director (Brendan Fletcher) and The Producer (Jan Chapman), as they explore career challenges and highlights, the inherent pull of Hollywood and the mechanics of the Australian film industry.

Sydney Writers Festival The annual Sydney Writers’ Festival returns in 2017 at the iconic piers of Walsh Bay. Kicking off on May 22nd the inspiring week of words will bring multiple talks, panels and performances by some of the biggest names in international literature. The festival presents over 300 events in Sydney with the aspiration to move, incite and provoke it’s audience, with some seriously special highlights such as the Oscar-nominated Armando Iannucci and the Jayne Eyre autobiography.
