Insight: The Film Business

Each year our Insight program focuses in on the Film industry, both a reflection of our love for all things cinema but as a nod to the proud history of the Paramount House building within which we reside.

This month we are thrilled to introduce our Insight cast as an Actor, a Director, and a Producer take the stage to discuss their individual career arc as well as the broader Australian film industry. We will also be focusing on the changing nature of film – as we embrace diversity, shame lecherous producers, and deal with important themes and stories.

Brooke Satchwell, Actor: She burst onto our television screens in 1996 while playing pretty teen Anne Wilkinson in Neighbours, and went on to win a Logie Award for Most Popular New Talent in 1998 and people’s Choice Award for Favourite Teen Idol. Over her career, Brooke has starred in some of Australia’s most loved TV programs (such as Water Rats, Packed To The Rafters, and Wonderland), stage (Vagina Monologues, The Play That Goes Wrong), and also been a regular guest panellist (Dirty Laundry Live, Good News Week).

Ben Briand, Director: Ben is a film director working across narrative and commercial disciplines. His award winning work is often praised for eliciting honest human performances from the heart of his stories.  He has directed projects featuring Gal Gadot, Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne and Jackie Weaver, and commercial projects for brands Apple, Qantas, LGBT Association, Oroton, and Asahi.  Ben accolades include the Silver SHOTS Young Director Award at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, Best Narrative film on Vimeo (for Apricot), Best Emerging Filmmaker at the Melbourne International Film Festival, and a Best Director nomination by the Directors Guild of Australia.

Bridget Ikin, Producer: A passionate champion of new and innovative filmmaking, Bridget has produced award-winning films, short films, documentaries and moving image projects over many years in both Australia and New Zealand, including An Angel at My Table, directed by Jane Campion; Look Both Ways, directed by Sarah Watt; Sherpa, directed by Jen Peedom and Crush, directed by Alison Maclean.  Just last month Bridget received an honorary degree –  Doctor of Arts, Film and Television  today – by the Australian Film Television and Radio School in recognition of her significant contribution to the screen industry.
